Event Horizon - Mission Statement.

The inaugural post of this blog should in fact be about the mission of this project. My name is Michael. I am an anthropology major currently seeking PhD in Molecular Anthropology and an eventual masters in Biology. I am attending classes at the University of Michigan. I am starting this blog as a project with the intention of sharing my views and ideas on how emerging technology effects humanity as we push forward into the future. I am a transhumanist and a singulaterian. I hold a firm belive that eventually we will be able to transcend our biology.
What is Transhumanism?

Taken from Wikipedia:
Transhumanism, abbreviated as H+ or h+, is an international intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally transforming the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities.[1] Transhumanist thinkers study the potential benefits and dangers of emerging technologies that could overcome fundamental human limitations, as well as study the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies. They predict that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with such greatly expanded abilities as to merit the label "posthuman".[1]
Essentially transhumanism is about the support of the development of techonologies and projduct that will safeguard human life. We ask the questions: Can we live forever? Do we have to die? Can we enhance ourselves? Can we get rid of illness?

Transhumanists also seek to answer the obvious questions regarding overpopulation, energy needs, and resource scarcity. Another issue facing transhumanity is how the population of Earth, with its diverse cultures and belief systems, will adapt to the coming changes. Will they welcome it with open arms? Will they fight they change? How will emerging technologies be regulated if at all? and How do we safeguard humanity from its accidental destruction?
What is the singularity?

I first heard about the concept of singularity from a book I read, The Singularity is Near. This book, by Ray Kurzweil, Spured my interest and really opened my eyes to the rapid advance of technology. The book describes that "The Onset of the 21st Century will be an era in which the very nature of what it means to be human will be both enriched and challenged as our species breaks the shackles of its genetic legacy and achieves inconceivable heights of intelligence, material progress, and longevity. While the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes will be profound, and the threats they pose considerable." This is taken from the back cover of this book.

Essentially there will come a point when technology develops faster then we can imagine and the advances to medical technology may make it possible for humans that are alive to day to not become victims of their biology. Once the technologies become available it will change us in a profound way. This change will be similar to how the world was changed when our ancient ancestors developed agriculture. Nanotech, Genetic Research, Biotechnological Research, and host of other technologies will change the world and us and at that singular point there will be no going back.

We Will Have Crossed an Event Horizon - Hence The Name of This Blog.
This Blog will explore trending technology and how I believe it will impact humanity as a whole. The goal is to inform the readers as many of the developments rarely get a spotlight on our media outlets.

This blog will cover:
  • Bio-technology.
  • Nanotechnology.
  • Human Enhancement Technology
  • Survaliance Technology and Privacy Issues.
  • Healthy Living So That We Can Be Alive When These Technologies Became Available
  • Green Technology For a Sustainable future.
  • Social Unrest and Other Political Issues.
I invite the readers to subscribe to my blog and follow it. In the coming days I will be adding a Facebook page for easier access. I welcome any and all comments and criticisms to my views. As a people we grow through interaction.

Below is a YouTube video that explains the basis of my view points.
